PREMESSA
Dal 16 al 19 luglio 1969 fu tenuto a Parigi un Premier Congrès International de Linguistique Sémitique et Chamito-Sémitique, nel corso del quale fu accolta la proposta di organizzare il congresso successivo a Firenze nella primavera del 1974. Ed è per me un gradito compito licenziare per la stampa gli Atti del Congresso fiorentino mentre sta a sua volta per svolgersi un Third International Hamito-Semitic Congress a Londra (marzo 1978). Nel momento in cui questo volume vede finalmente la luce desidero ricordare con profondo affetto e rimpianto il professor Giacomo Devoto che sostenne l'organizzazione del nostro Congresso e ne ospitò i lavori nella sede dell'Accademia Toscana di Scienze e Lettere, di cui era allora Presidente. Viva gratitudine è anche dovuta al Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, senza il cui contributo la pubblicazione di questi Atti non sarebbe stata possibile. Mi sia consentito infine ricordare i miei collaboratori fiorentini: L. Bettini e M. G. Pini che assicurarono la segreteria del Congresso, P. Marrassini e G. Conti che in periodi successivi hanno curato come segretari di redazione questo volume. Firenze, 16 febbraio 1978
