The Paestum National Archaeological Museum its history, layout and displays - QUAP2

The Paestum National Archaeological Museum is one of the most important archaeological museums of Magna Graecia . With its many panels, reconstructive drawings and models, and a careful selection of artifacts, it allows visitors to follow the history of the area from prehistory to the foundation of the Achaean colony at the end of the seventh century BC, and from the end of the Lucanian conquest to the foundation of the Latin colony in 273 BC. The Gaudo-culture evidence, the archaic metopes from the Heraion at the mouth of the Sele, the Zeus from the southern sacred area, the Tomb of the Diver, the extraordinary gallery of painted tomb walls from the Lucanian period, the bronze statue of Marsyas and the statues of the family of Augustus are the milestones of an extraordinary itinerary through history. Marina Cipriani is director of Paestum Archaeological Area and Museum. She has organized many exhibitions, scholarly meetings, and restoration and valorization projects. Since 2002 she has been collaborating with the Università degli Studi di Salerno on a research project in Achaea ( ). She has authored a number of essays and articles; most recently, she has edited the acts of the international meeting Il restauro dei templi di Poseidonia (2007). Fausto Longo is assistant professor of Greek and Roman Archaeology and History of Art at the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy of the University of Salerno . He has been collaborating with the Direction of the Paestum National Archaeological Museum since 1995. He has authored articles and essays on the topography of the Greek world and bronze production in southern . With Luca Cerchiai and Lorena Jannelli, he coauthored the book The Greek Cities of Magna Graecia and Sicily, The Paul Getty Museum , Los Angeles 2004.
