Paolo Matthiae (Roma, 9 gennaio 1940) è un archeologo, scrittore e orientalista italiano.

Attualmente è professore di archeologia e storia dell'arte del Vicino Oriente presso la Università degli studi di Roma "La Sapienza". È direttore della spedizione italiana ad Ebla, della quale è considerato lo scopritore, fin dal 1963 ed ha lavorato negli scavi di Tell Afis e Tell Fray. Ha pubblicato numerosi libri ed articoli relativi ad Ebla e alla storia dell'arte della Mesopotamia e della Siria in genere; in essi, partendo dall'esperienza condotta sul campo, ha intrapreso una revisione critica del ruolo storico della Siria nel quadro delle civiltà del Vicino Oriente.
È membro di varie istituzioni, tra le quali l'Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, l'Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres e il Deutsches Archaologisches Institut; è laureato honoris causa alla Università Autonoma di Madrid.
